Global ride-hailing app inDrive continues to champion the adoption of 5G technology among enterprises in the Philippines, revealing that 5G is a key driver behind its rapid growth in the country. inDrive APAC Regional Director Mark Tolley shared these insights during a Joint Cybersecurity Working Group session hosted by Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson.

5G, the latest global wireless network standard, offers users faster speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity. Tech experts highlight that its programmability enables enterprises to customize their systems more efficiently than ever before.

“I believe it’s important to note that 5G is essentially one of our twin engines,” Tolley explained, underscoring how the app’s growth and performance are heavily reliant on advanced network capabilities. “Without 5G, we’d struggle to be the app we are today.”

One notable application of 5G within inDrive is in its mapping technology. The network’s real-time data processing and predictive analytics allow for optimized driver routing, reduced passenger wait times, and improved estimated time of arrival accuracy. Beyond faster trips, 5G helps inDrive drivers maximize fuel efficiency, enabling them to keep more of their earnings instead of spending on refueling.

5G also powers inDrive’s unique peer-to-peer business model, facilitating seamless communication between drivers and passengers and smooth in-app transactions. This model empowers passengers to choose drivers based on ratings, car models, and ride history, while drivers can select passengers by reviewing profiles and routes. The result is a transparent and reliable service even in high-traffic areas such as airports, business districts, and provincial hubs.

Moreover, 5G is critical to inDrive’s Safety Center features. Its speed and capacity support the “Share Your Ride” function, enabling passengers to easily share trip details with trusted contacts. Additionally, the SOS button allows passengers to quickly alert authorities in emergencies.

Looking ahead, Tolley revealed that inDrive is collaborating with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to develop an expansion plan targeting underserved areas in the Philippines. The company is also in talks with local telecom providers, following similar discussions in Nepal and Indonesia as part of its regional growth strategy.

“These underserved areas still face mobility challenges,” Tolley said. “By partnering with DICT and telecom companies, we aim to improve mobility and support local economies across the country.”

Currently, inDrive is working to enhance services in Metro Manila, Bacolod, Butuan, Cagayan De Oro, Baguio, Iloilo, and Cebu, where it is already operational.

By leveraging 5G technology, inDrive continues its mission to provide fair and reasonable fares while expanding its reach to key areas throughout the Philippines.
