After its successful regional launch in Thailand last year, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) formally unveiled the updated new Strada in an off-road adventure drive with Dakar Rally Champ Hiroshi Masuoka and local motoring scribes in Pradera Verde in Lubao, Pampanga.
MEET THE BEAST
If there’s one thing that differentiate the Mitsubishi Strada, it would have to be its design. Why? Take a closer look under its design concept which embodies a new-generation “Dynamic Shield”. That’s true, it’s actually not the first time you’ve heard on Mitsubishi’s design philosophy, which focuses primarily on front fascia.
The high hood and functional LED lamps layout communicate an even sturdier look. Meanwhile, LED projector type head lamps are harmonized with grille design and projector lamps (for the GT 4×4 and GLS 4×4) to express a wider and more stable image.
Inside the new Strada is a functional and modernized center panel and console. All variants feature 2-DIN Touch Screen monitor, tuner, MP3 player, USB, iPod-ready Auxiliary-in, Bluetooth with Mirror Link feature Multi-media system. All variants are also equipped with GPS Navigation System.
In terms of passenger convenience, Mitsubishi provides front and rear smartphone tray which includes USB terminals and USB power socket.
The interior will make you forget that you are riding a pcikup truck. It boosts a roomy interior which can comfortably seat 5 adults. Thanks to the unique J-Line design that offers a class-leading legroom for an enhanced comfort.
URBAN WORKHORSE
Under the hood of this workhorse is Mitsubishi’s strong 2.4-liter 4 In-line 16 Valve DOHC Diesel with Variable Geometry Turbo and MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control System) which delivers 178 horsepower and 430 Newton meter of torque.
According to MMPC, the ride of Strada improved more with the use of larger rear dampers which contain more damping oil. Stopping power were also improved with the use of larger front discs and caliper pistons. The GT 4WD A/T is equipped with Super Select 4-Wheel Drive and the GLS 4WD MT is fitted with Easy Select 4WD which delivers optimum traction and handling characteristics on any given road condition.
HOW SAFE IS THE STRADA?
Mitsubishi has never been compromised in the field of safety. Thus, the company hosts the Strada with an array of passive and advanced active safety features. It carries the proprietary Mitsubishi Motors’ RISE body (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) which absorbs the impact of collision.
The Japanese car brand retained the Active Stability Traction Control (ASTC), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Trailer Stability Assist (TSA), which are all standard on all variants.
Meantime, the top of the line variant (GT 4×4) of the new Strada is equipped with Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM) which can detect vehicles and pedestrian ahead preventing or reducing impact of collision.
Best of all, it also has the Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS) which prevents accidents resulting from improper use of accelerator when moving off or reversing. Blind Spot Warning (BSW) is also standard on the the GT 4×4 variant.
The 2019 Mitsubishi Strada is priced at P1,165,000 (GLX Plus 2WD M/T); P1,240,000 (GLX Plus 2WD A/T); P1,225,000 (GLS 2WD M/T); P1,300,000 (GLS 2WD A/T ); P1,445,000 (GLS 4WD M/T); and top-of-the-line variant P1,670,000 (GT 4WD A/T).
